Week 6: June 15

Book Club Agenda

Welcome to your sixth week at the Curda IT Cafe.

Feedback continues to be very positive in this course and I certainly appreciate it.  I am trying to implement some suggestions as I am able. I would like to mention that I do not expect that you will read or even peruse every link given for each of the topics - sometimes there can be a lot!  I provide these links for further information if you need it to clarify the text or the discussion for the topic.  Many of you can read the text and participate in discussions without ever looking at another link.  That is fine with me.  Others may really be interested in a particular topic and want to know more or need more information than what is in your text - that is what the links are for.  I guess what I am saying is you do not have to eat all of your vegetables.  Feel free to leave some on your plate or don't even order them at all :-) I am very happy with the way everyone seems to be progressing.  I have received many good research topic ideas. Many have sent me empirical articles for review and I am sending feedback as soon as I get them, when possible, in case you need to do some more looking.

This week we will begin to look at some of the trends and current research in the field of instructional technology.  We have some interesting readings this week that I hope will get everyone thinking and discussing. We have several guest chefs for our first open mic night.  They have all done a great job.

You have 2 weeks before your first 2 article analyses are due so start working now if you haven't already. I have posted my sample article analysis on the threaded discussion from week 4 for those who want to see how I would have analyzed the article.  This does not mean that what you said was wrong or right if it was different from mine because we are all allowed to have our own opinion.  What this sample will do, I hope, is give you a model for how to discuss each of the areas within your own article analyses that are due soon.

Appetizers this Week

By the end of this week I expect you to be able to:
  • discuss the role of motivation in instructional design and technology
  • identify current trends and issues related to motivational strategies and application in learning environments
  • discuss the differing views of the role of learning styles in instructional design and technology
  • discuss the current trend in helping learners become effective problem solvers
  • contrast human performance and training approaches within performance technology
